📚 Books and Reading

This month I want to recommend two very interesting books.

  • Appeasing Hitler: Chamberlain, Churchill and the Road to War – in my quest to uncover historical precedents of appeasement and its real consequences, I turned to this book. My interest was drawn not only to the policy itself, but also to the process of a nation’s radicalisation and the rapidity—or delay—of the democratic world’s response. There’s an old saying: history repeats itself. In light of current events, the notion of “newer more” could easily turn into a plea: “maybe just one last time, please.

The book can be found on Amazon.
  • Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World – the book explains the value of having a broad range of knowledge and skills. Epstein argues that in today’s complex world, it’s often better to learn how to think before learning what to think about, challenging the notion that deep specialization is the only route to success. Highly recommended for anyone questioning whether to specialize narrowly or embrace a wider approach to learning.

💡 Thoughts

  • Claude 3.7 Sonnet has been generating a lot of discussion, particularly among developers working on real-world applications. I’ve been testing it myself, and it’s clear that this model is a strong contender in the LLM space. Here are my takeaways from using Claude 3.7 Sonnet:
  1. Dual functionality – Works as both a standard LLM and a reasoning model, allowing users to choose between quick responses and deeper, more thoughtful answers.
  2. Extended thinking model – Enhances performance in math, physics, coding, and complex instructions by letting the model self-reflect before responding.
  3. API control – Developers can manage how much “thinking” the model does by setting a token budget, with a max output of 128K tokens.
  4. Practical focus – Designed for real-world applications, prioritizing business use cases over academic benchmarks.

From my experience, Claude 3.7 is a major step forward compared to its predecessor, especially in reasoning-based tasks. That said, capacity limitations were evident at launch, which is something to keep an eye on as adoption scales. Still, it’s far better than GPT-based Copilot, offering more reliable and consistent performance in real-world tasks.
